ALIES SLUITER is an Australian writer and director. She recently directed an episode of Aftertaste (ABC Australia and Closer Productions).

Her Academy Award® qualified short film AYAAN, is a Vimeo Staff Pick and has played at festivals worldwide, winning 30+ awards including an Australian Directors Guild Award, Best International Short at the Show Me Shorts Festival, Best Short Film at CinefestOZ and the National Board of Review Motion Pictures Award (USA). Ayaan was also nominated for a Dendy Award at Sydney Film Festival, the Grand Prix at Tampere International Film Festival and an Australian Writers Guild Award.

Alies’ latest short, MYTH (ADG Award winner and Outstanding Emerging Female Director Award at Flickerfest) premiered at the 2022 Melbourne International Film Festival, where Alies attended the prestigious Accelerator Lab.

She’s a 2020 BAFTA Newcomer, a Berlinale Talent Campus alumna and was awarded Australia’s prestigious John Monash Scholarship to complete her Masters in Screenwriting and Directing at Columbia University, where she won the top screenwriting award for her feature script, Boy on Fire and also taught undergraduate screenwriting.

Before becoming a filmmaker Alies toured the world as a violinist and AACTA nominated composer, collaborating with eminent artists including Nitin Sawhney, Sylvie Guillem, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Akram Khan. She also musically directed Laurence Olivier Award and Time Out Critics Award (UK) nominated theatre and dance productions and composed for Film and TV.
